Lavandula angustifolia (formerly L. officinalis) is a Mediterranean, ornamental shrub with aromatic flowers widely used in herbal medicine “for anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, depression, headache and pain,” according to WebMD. They add: “Lavender contains an oil that seems to have sedating effects and might relax certain muscles. It also seems to have antibacterial and antifungal effects.” Which (in addition to the great taste) are just the effects one wants in a brewing herb.
